Very Sheltered Housing or 'Extra Care' is a fresh approach to the provision of accommodation and support for older people. Occupants enjoy the comfort of living in their own home as an alternative to residential care, which offers greater choice, promotes independence and offers the stimulation of a lively environment in which to live. The Very Sheltered Housing (VSH) initiative, taken forward by Bristol City Council and a consortium of charitable housing providers, is designed to provide accommodation for people who would otherwise require residential care services in a care home.
The Trust has contributed to the VSH initiative with the local authority by providing VSH accommodation in two of its retirement complexes in the city of Bristol, Westbury Fields and Monica Wills House. VSH flats have one or two bedrooms and are purpose-built with wheelchair access and the needs of older people in mind. Lift access is available to all floors, kitchens are fitted with modern units and include an oven, hob and extractor hood. To enable individuals to bathe more easily with or without the assistance of our care and support team, all bathrooms have a level access shower. The majority of the accommodation is available for rent, but a small number may be purchased on a shared ownership (part-buy/part-rent) basis.
